In Halifax today the old 'globe' lanterns that previously occupied the bus station are to be replaced with more cheap and nasty Albanies.

Calderdale council should replace them with either Opalo's or Saturn's.

Well, at least you may be able to get some nice globes.

Anway, why is heritage lighting being used for a bus station... hardly the most architecturally appealing part of a town is it?

There is an article in the local paper about York's street lights going 'green'
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/5045630 ... ng_scheme/

Quote:
Proposed projects for reaching this target include replacing 1,300 mercury vapour lights with modern alternatives, installing 50 lights with lower wattage bulbs, using solar panels to power 50 bollards and signs and substituting sodium lights with fluorescent lanterns.

1,300 mercury vapour lanterns... I may need a bigger garage!
I didn't realise there was so many mercury lanterns still in use - and the quoted figure may only be a portion of the whole city's mercury stock.

"substituting sodium lights with fluorescent lanterns." - hopefully this will mean BOTH SOX AND SON. It may also mean that the 80w PL-L residiums may become more popular elsewhere.

"installing 50 lights with lower wattage bulbs" - doesn't sound very much does it? I think this may be referring to the use of Cosmo Sapphires and ZXU1's.

----

That's the future, and now for the past! I've found a shed load of old pictures of the city. Some don't have street lights in, but are interesting nontheless.
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookback/

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
1987 - this road leads to Cliffords Tower and the York Dungeon. in the centre left is a wall bracket with GEC Z8600. This is now a ZX3 that is roughly 10-12 years old.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
An archaeological dig - now the site of the AVIVA building with the pyramid on top. The 1960's tower behind is the Park Inn.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Newgate Market in 1981. Nicely in focus is an unknown top entry mercury lantern.... now a GEC Z5590 stands there running a SON lamp... In the top centre (near the 'city leather co' sign) is a large GEC floodlight that lights a church. I believe this is still there, but is the same type that was in the AMEY skip a week or two ago, as was with Stelmers huge unmarked ballast

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
1992, and the incinerator chimney ("the destructor") is having work done on it, which included it being capped as the incinerator had not been used for at least a decade previous. I remember this work being done to the chimney at the time. The big grey building at the bottom is Halfords, and on the other side of the river is a site of land that is now the DEFRA offices at Kings Pool (which often has another name if a local takes off the 'l' on the sign!!)

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
The city incinerator in 1983... only the chimney now remains as a listed structure, and illuminated as it stands next to a Morrisons superstore.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Construction of the A64 bypass - this being the A166/A1079 overbridge being built in 1975.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
1975, and this is the bridge that takes the A64 over the river ouse near the Mcarthur glen designer outlet - or it will be when it is built!
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ning_Press
same site, from the air a year earlier.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Piccadilly being properly developed in 1981. the buildings on the right were demolished to make way for the coppergate shopping centre - the buildings roughly being where the back of Fenwick's is. Those buildings are on the other side of the river foss to where the crane is... the crane standing on what is now the Banana Warehouse

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Walmgate in the 1930's, with the original installations that inspire modern "heritage" lighting installations.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Walmgate bar in the 50's/60's - note the top entry sodium lantern to the left

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
One end of the Shambles near Kings Square... and one building is being held up by three planks of wood!

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Nessgate in 1965 - and that building beyond the central island is the same one as has the wall bracket and GEC Z8600 in the first linked picture above. The island has an unidentified lantern.
Nowadays, the junction is a tight bend from the right going straight up in this picture, with the traffic island removed.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Parliament street in the early 1900's, with a carbon arc lantern (possibly)

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
this is the road called Pavement (!), in 1967. Take out all the cars, and this scene is almost identical today.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Here's an interesting one. August 1963, and the groundworks in the middle-ground is for the huge Stonebow House which occupies the site to this day. The building right in the centre (with The Minster behind) is the Methodist church, and the patch of land to the right of that is now the site where my mum works. In the lower-middle of the picture is a Revo Monarch column with a top entry sodium lantern. The column is still in use today, I believe.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Lower Micklegate in 1950 - This was BEFORE the co-op (victoria house) building was built, which was before the Ramada Encore hotel, Venture photography, and budgens supermarket which now stand on the right up to just after that first car in this picture... which is where George Hudson Street goes off (and where all the buses turn in). Notice the catenary lighting...

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Kings Square in what I think may be the 1940's/50's... this area now is pedestrianised and the square now hosts street performers and pigeons, but back then it was a major throughfare (as indicated by the prescence of traffic lights). Notice the double lantern installation in the top corner. The huge building which says LAMB, above the traffic light repeater signal, is no longer there.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
The thing to take note of in this picture is the huge cooling tower right in the city centre! The chimney is the incinerator chimney. I have another image which contains the cooling tower, and again it's right near the incinerator chimney - which makes me think it was in the Layerthorpe/Foss Bank area (foss bank now being a sainsbury's store). Nowadays, to see a cooling tower whilst in York, you have to go a few floors up Stonebow House and looks towards Selby (Drax, eggbrough or ferrybridge power stations, which, on a clear day like today, the cloud plume can be seen from Monks Cross area). I am trying to figure out what that cooling tower would have been for....

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Goodramgate, with a Revo Monarch column and top entry sodium lantern outside what is the Cross Keys pub. Today, the column remains but has a QSM on the end.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
1972, Micklegate Bar. The A64 bypass has not yet been built, and that sign to the left (by the pedestrians) reads "A19" and points towards the rail station. All traffic to the Yorkshire Coast would have passed through this junction. Above the more modern height warning sign (and the prohibition of all vehicles sign) is what looks like a Revo Horizon lantern on a  wall bracket. One Revo Horizon still stands in York, in the Hungate area, which is why I think the lantern in this picture is also a Horizon.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Same site, 10 years previous. Notice the rather blocky lanterns - these could be linear sodium, possibly open lanterns.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
Row of parked cars in Parliament street... notice the rather ornate top entry lantern and bracket combo in the distance.

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
1910, Ouse Bridge. The Revo Caerlions aren't there yet.

And quite possibly the most interesting non-streetlight picture.
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/pics/lookbac ... ing_Press/
An aerial view of YORK CITADEL. The river foss is still running the same course today... and the white U-shaped building is the High Court - the building to the right of that now is part of the York Castle Museum. Opposite the courts is Clifford Tower, which is still standing. Now here's the interesting bit: The rest of the site does not exist anymore! NO castle walls, NO Citadel, and that array of buildings to the right of Cliffords Tower is now a car park. I honestly can't believe that this got demolished to make some open space and a damn car park! The arrow-straight road to the very right of the picture is Piccadilly leading straight onto Parliament Street - or to give it the route number of the time: the A19. On the very left of the picture is Ouse Bridge.
I think those castle buildings should be rebuilt!

I went to Sheffield yesterday. I have to say they are quite into their Thorn; plenty of Beta 79s and Rigas for minor roads and Alpha 8s and Civics for main roads. The city also has quite a lot of Urbis ZX2 lanterns. However there seems to be a sprawl of black Arcs on black columns cropping up; whilst these aren't too bad in terms of aesthetics, is this the future for Sheffield?

Well doesn't Sheffield have a PFI starting/about to start? Are those PFI replacements?

There are black Arcs on google maps for Sheffield ages ago - I'm not sure if it is a PFI as such but I hear the government gave them a sum of money to mend their thousands of potholes, street lights and just roads generally.

The Arc's have been around for at least a couple of years now in various places. But Sheffield does indeed have a sum of money to update its ageing stock and fix broken lanterns... I have an idea as to where the sheffield streetlight depot is, but have never had the chance to pop in.

Is it at the side of the railway line where you can see a pile of crushed concrete columns? because if thats where it is i'll come with you as i fancy getting a few of Sheff's lanterns too.

The place I'm thinking of is when you're heading south on a train out of sheffield station (or to manchester), the train takes a corner or two and up on the left (if you're facing the front of the train) is a depot with council gritters there and an VERY ancient top entry installation

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 21973&z=16
Where the tall trees are on the right, after that are some yellow trucks and the old installation is there.
I may be totally wrong, that may not be the streetlight depot at all... I just don't know!

A few months back I reported about a sign I saw stating that permission had been granted for solar powered LED lighting of a cycle path near to me. I later found out this lighting was to be 'guide lights' and not street lights. The lighting is being installed and is more-or-less solar powered cats eyes using white-blueish LED's, and red near obstructions. As only part of it is done at present, when I was cycling and entered the 'lit' area from the unlit area, it felt like I was going down an airport runway!
