I saw an installation of P149 lanterns in Essex a year or so ago and remember the bowls being tapered so they were almost 'V' shaped.

Heck, this is a genuine surprise! I hope they are stil there. And I definitely remember the bowls being nearly V shaped too (that's why I thought they were Beta Threes until I discovered the Beta Three never ran mercury!).

Going slightly off thread.... This one does.. :D

One of my "conversions"...

I can, of course, only speak for my corner of Essex, which used to have loads of P149s until they were wiped out. But if they still exist somewhere in Essex it would be great to see them again. I'm afraid I'm not on the Yahoo group (although I do occasionally have a look!), so I was wondering if any of you guys know Simon, and if he would mind me asking him if he remembers where he saw them?

I'll drop him an email...

The Beta 3 is a lantern that [I think] would look great using all lamp types. Maybe even SON. Few lanterns would be able to hold a title like that! If I owned something as rare as a Beta 3, I'd be too scared to touch it, just incase I dropped the bowl on the floor and it shattered or something!

Yes, I think that the rare stuff should be in more protected areas. Those who've been to my new house will know my Revo Festival is still wrapped up with a couple of duvet's so it goesn't get knocked against in the garage! The thing is that a lantern can be in service for years and not get damaged, then all it takes is one slip of the hand, or something not poisitioned right and true, and something gets broken that's had (if not impossible) to replace. It's happened to me with the outer tube from a little chef lantern - piece of wood moved slightly against it, caused it to fall over and whack against the door threshold of my shed at the other house, and it just split in two.

That is a fantastic picture - especially against the dusk sky, and again that's pretty much how I remember the P149s looking like when they used to be installed around here.

I did under Ukastle 2, it didn't win, but since that was more than 3 months ago, I think the rules allow it to be resubmitted.
