Some great footage of an old outdoor 1960s street lighting exhibition on BBC South Today this evening. Visible online only this evening, as far as I know, click this link and click "see the latest programme in full".

Nice. Also a nice showcase for people which are thinking "all modern streetlights are looking the same" .

Absolutely fantastic! I am shocked at those surreal screenshots - an enthusiast must be secretly responsible for this! Imagine if they did such an exhibition now - would it capture the public's interest? I have mentioned before that the older generations were more informed in public streetlighting (for instance that motorway guidebook shown on the BBC FOUR motorway documentary) and my dad has even passed on the knowledge that yellow/orange sodium lamps are better in foggy conditions.

Those images of the street lighting display are very odd indeed... If that happened in a street in real life, everyone would complain that it looked mismatched!

side road mercury in the same road as multi-lamp HPMV/SON lanterns and 180w SOX... Not even edinburgh does that!

What a sight that exhibition must have been. You just would not get that sort of thing nowadays. Even if you went to the headquarters of a street lighting manufacturer in most cases you would not find an exhibition outside (CU Phosco is the exception). All those manufacturers basically just showing off their products proudly. And it wasn't as if that exhibition was the only one, there were a few more publically accessible street lighting exhibitions elsewhere in the old days too, although none quite with that quantity of columns along a straight section of road!

Something at the exhibition that would have been great to see in real life:

What a monster! What appears to be a quad Siemens Kuwait installation!

On a separate note, Happy 60th Birthday to the surviving original columns and lanterns in this photograph.

Lighting exhibitions have been held in the past in Edinburgh and the London's South Bank during the 1960s. It is not clear where those South Today images came from.

A seaside town somewhere. I'm sure there must be a couple of enthusiasts who would know where.

That is amazing! I wonder if any of these were installed anywhere?

In those days there was more pride taken in the appearance of this country by it's residents, hence even something that we take for granted, like streetlighting, had an exhibition to show off the finest designs of the day. Today most streetlighting installations are not done with design flair in mind but like most other things in life today the only consideration is how much money can be saved by cutting corners  :(
