The Sapphires are now almost extinct at J4 as replacement by Lumas continues. There is just a short stretch on the west bound carriageway from the point at which the link road from the southbound M3 crosses the M27 and merges into the main carriageway. |

On the M3 southbound at J14, the link road running parallel to the M3 has excavations for new columns. However, its only just over 2 years ago that the existing Stainton hex hockey sticks were fitted with Lumas in this location. Highways England (in)effective use of resources yet again... |

I believe this is just a cable replacement scheme rather than column replacement. |

Local radio traffic bulletins were this morning reporting an outage of the newly installed Luma retrofits on the M27 J4 west to M3 north link road. Interestingly the same lighting was dayburning yesterday PM. So much for the reliability of RF nodes (and ultimately software) vs the old fashioned way of hardware control via a photocell, feeder pillar and group switching... |

After a pause of several months, more work is taking place on the M27 changing out quad optic ZX4s for Lumas on new brackets. At J7, 6 columns in the central reservation have been converted so far from the west side slip roads through to the east side of the junction (i.e to east side of the roundabout above the junction). These are overnight works, so this gives an indication of the level of work possible in one session, presumably with one crew. |

Due to the sheer size and weight of the quad optic ZX4s, mobile cranes are being used to safely lower the old lanterns down to the ground. Well, they are about 3 metres long and contain two 250W and two 400W ballasts! Come the end of February, it is likely the M27 will not have any ZX4s left. The M27 used to be infamous for its ZX4s, especially the distinctive quad optic ones. |

Another 8 columns west of the first section, had their ZX4s replaced with Lumas last night. If tonight's work is west of last nights, that will remove all the ZX4s back to the start of the lit section at J7 of the M27. |

I noticed the M27 stretch from J7-8 has been replaced with Lumas. Not the slip roads at 7 though. |

Lumas now stretch from the start of the lighting at J7 through to the west side of J8, above the roundabout below. The eastern section remains to be converted. The central reservation lighting east of J7 and the west bound off slip lighting (still ZX3s) were all dayburning today. This section was originally grouped switched but the Lumas have individual RF nodes, so it maybe the master node hasn't yet been installed, or the slaves not mapped, or the Lumas may be under test. At J4, Lumas have replaced the ZX4s on the mainline between the M3 link roads. On the east side of the junction around a dozen ZX4s remain on the WB carriageway after the M3 slip. Further on as the M3 rejoins there are around 6-8 Sapphires still to be changed. The J9 slip roads now also have Lumas, where as J10 still awaits Lumas to replace the ZX3s. |

Half of them still don't work, I guess it's a power issue. Let's hope the slip roads a J7 are replaced soon, you could count on one hand the lamps that work. |
