Does anyone know when the first Thorn Alpha 4s started appearing in Glasgow?

Mid 80s i thought.

There's some wonderful old cast-iron swan-neck columns in the side streets of Ayr.

Always meant to take some photos of them back when I lived in Ayr, but never got round to it.

Last week I stumbled across an old YouTube video someone had posted. It's a recording of a road trip up the west coast of Scotland someone had made in 1999. It's an interesting time capsule for a lot of reasons, most notably because it features a lot of old street lights that are long gone. There are so many small replacements here and there that you don't notice how much of the street landscape has changed in twenty years. It's an interesting blast from the past, especially if you're from the area and like street lights.

The video is here if you're interested. It's pretty long and you'll probably want to mute the audio. The background music is a bit "American tourist visiting Scotland". Also, it's a video camera recording from the 90s, so it's far from HD and the sky is blown out in places, making it hard to see some of the street lighting.

I've made an Imgur album of screen caps of the most interesting bits, and I'll post a couple of images below.

Some old cast iron SOX fixtures with above-ground wiring.

North Ayrshire seemed to like SOX lanterns at very jaunty angles.

Concrete and SOX as far as the eye can see.

Contrasting concrete columns - one more decorative and the other more utilitarian.

More stills from the video

I've  received a personal message in reply to this post that originated back in 2014 on page 5 of the discussion. The original poster was trencheel303 who no longer appears to post on Ukastle. My post from 2014 discusses his images. His original images were on Photobucket - and are now lost, so 'I've had to substitute GSV images from 2015.

The concretes are by Concrete Utilities. The design predates WW2 but they were still made to the same basic design up to the 1960s.

The best way to date them is try and find old maps showing the dates the roads were built. I suspect the columns are original to the roads.

The 2nd photograph with the Range Rover in, looks to show 1950/60s bungalows, so I would guess they are post, rather than pre-war.

I'm not quite sure what the lanterns are either, they may be early BTH/AEI Ambers.

If they are, then they would tie up with the columns from new. Searching for old photographs would indicate if those areas of Glasgow used mercury. Mercury conversions usually took place in the mid to late 70s following the energy crisis. The lanterns are older than that.

Afraid not! Even better! Those unidentified 90w SOX 1950s side entry lantern is made by Bleeco lighting . The side entry variant being numbered the "608" and top entry being "607" They date to around 1952/1953 and were originally for 140w SO/H lamps. Bleeco 607s/608s are still pretty common in Polloksheilds, Glasgow as of now.

I can't find any images online of the Bleeco 607/608, so it would be useful to know how that identification was achieved.

Looking again at the column with the Range Rover next to it, the lantern looks to be different, bowl is of a different profile and canopy lacks the raised "bulge", looks to be a GEC 9455/65.

I did some exploring around Stirling last year, and came across a few relics.

In a private car park, were about 5 of these 8m concrete columns and brackets and old SOX lanterns.

On a side street, there was also a 5m concrete column with longer bracket. This was in good conditon considering its age and fitted with a GEC Z9480 lantern.

There were many chunky concrete columns (sleeved) on the way into the city.

Those are quite some survivors, even though the unsleeved 25ft concretes no longer appear to work. But even looking at the sleeved concretes, look at those unusual chunky sleeves!
