In the 1950's Stanton supplied over 1300 of their 7b columns fitted with GEC9420 open lanterns running 45W SO to Salisbury. These columns were also used in outlining regions of the city and surrounding villages such as Durrington. The Stanton 7b was a side road version of the main road Stanton 6b column which used a scaled version of the same bracket.

I had assumed they had all been sleeved long ago...

But take a look  at this and this!

Excellent find!   :D

It looks like it's in the middle of nowhere so it's probably been forgotten about. Sleeving is unnecessary for this beauty though as it's in fine condition!  :)

Yep it is down a dead end serving some cottages and not directly visible from the "main road". Quite often I've found superb relics hidden down such cul de sacs and alley ways.

Brilliant find! I am liking that installation a lot. Shame there aren't more of them left.

I'm not sure about being forgotten about, because it is a 1970s/1980s Beta 5, which was the same time that most of the other sleeves were fitted in Wiltshire. [Mainly 1970s.] It's just odd how they just fitted a top entry Beta 5 rather than sleeved the column.

I suspect that since they can't get a cherry picker to it, the lantern was changed using a ladder. Disc cutting through the bracket and then fitting a sleeve would have been a bit difficult from a ladder... :?

The overlap between Devon and Cornwall is persisting a little. For a few years both Devon and Cornwall were both using lanterns such as white Urbis ZX1s. Whilst columns were different, the use of the same lanterns at a relatively small level was noticeable. Devon has now gone over to using grey Evolos burning CosmoPolis lamps. When briefly in Cornwall today I noticed some grey Evolos there too. I don't know if they were Cosmo or not, but I suspect they were, and they were controlled by radio frequency nodes (Harvard LeafNut). I think SEC may have the contract in both counties.

Dun-dun! Today I've seen an Iridium fitted on an unsleeved concrete column not too far from me. The concrete looks like it has been hit with a hammer or something to crumble back the concrete so the Iridium can slide onto the metal. Looks very out of proportion. It is a 1980s CU Byway X and the lantern it replaced was a Phosco P225 of the same age.

Something else (but I didn't see it today) I saw in Winsley were very interesting unsleeved concrete columns. I have seen some pictures of similar installations on the internet, but not that many. They have top entry Beta 5s.

So a bit like this one? Full view - different type of columns to your one.

It is a rare-sight to see Iridiums retrofitted onto concrete columns.

Well becoming depressingly common in Wiltshire.
