Great, I know exactly the ones you mean now. We used to have identical installations on the A585 through Thornton-Cleveleys, long-gone now though! I'm surprised those are still in place, concrete columns on a busy roundabout like that are quite rare these days!

Something unusual has happened in Brighouse near to the council offices. There is a 1950's Stanton column there but instaed of having an Alpha 3 stuck to the end of it it now has an Arc but stangely this makes the column have more of a 'rounded' appearence.

I remember when these Alpha 3's were Mercury lit then in 1998 they were converted to SON. In which ruined them as i prefer Mercury to SON.

In Luddenden, on the outskirts of 'fax has GEC type lanterns, they have a flatish canopy with a deep bowl and are top entry.

Witnessed a night time failed lamp replacement round Mexborough by Doncaster Council at around 8pm today.

Guessing they did most of the area.

Also spotted a streetlighting survey vehicle on the road towards Worksop after the Treble Bob roundabout at J30 M1.

I don't know if this will be a trial, or the future of York's streetlighting for the next few years... But these Urbis Sapphires are about to be installed in Mill Lane, Wigginton.

Okay, so the lantern of choice may be moving away from Holophane towards an egg-shaped lantern (which it's been a while since the Arc was in favour about 8-10 years ago)... but why would they change so suddenly?

Yep, York's getting COSMO! I think these will either be 60w or 90w, depending on the SOX lanterns they are replacing... I think the SOX lanterns are 55w, and if this is the case then 60w CPO will be used.

And it's not just a through road that is getting Cosmo:

Yeah... they're only ZX1's, not exactly brilliant1 but hey, they look a bit different to normal ZX 1's on the outside, and they have 60w Cosmo lamps. Quite why 60w is needed, I'm not sure. And I thought Morritt Close was fairly close to where I live, and it is - in between where I used to live and now live. Take a look on streetview:

And yes, they will be replacing those rather odd looking post-top QSM's!

I wonder if there's any boxes in that depot with the name of my street on, followed by a lantern type and "60w Cosmo" written on the side?

It's not very often that you get to know the future lantern choice before it's been installed...!

Couldn't they just reuse the QSMs? They only look about 5 years old! (Unless it was down to gear failure of course...)

Hello, we're talking about councils here! Even gear failure is no excuse with the quick change gear trays you get nowadays.

It does seem a bit strange! You would think they would use the cosmo lanterns to replace old SOX lighting rather than relatively-modern QSMs! I didn't think the ZX1 was still in production anyway, they seem a bit old-fashioned to me  :?

Well, they have written ZX1 on the box, but the lanterns inside are ZXU1s.
