Thanks for correcting me on the ident of the lanterns, still learning!
Now for some more antiques I found today around the Port Talbot area..
A Revo belltop(?) on 'The Uplands' just off the Cymmer road A4107. The area has many cast iron columns remaining, though most have been converted to side entry SOX, there are a couple of older survivors.

A closer look, the fuse box did have REVO cast on it, though I couldnt get a photo.

Not 20 yards away was this concrete example, I think the lantern is worthy of note, but dont know the type. Im sure those on here can identify it easily  :)

Not far away on the road 'Letty Harri' is this very attractive installation..

All the above lanterns work, as I saw them lit up a couple of nights ago as I was passing.

Also, I noted what looked like a REVO Sol'D'Or lantern in a builders yard in Bridgend, I'll try and get a photo for you to look at, certainly had the very slim neck off the column..

A little update of recent finds around Bridgend.

One of a group of three mercury lit post tops (GEC Z5670?) In Tan-Y-Bryn, Pencoed.

Not very far away, the entrance road to Sony electronics, Pencoed, is lit totally by these mercury lit lanterns.

You may have noticed I seem to have a soft spot for mercury lighting!

Vintage mercuries are not dead in the Bridgend area! Following the recent Google Streetview update to include Bridgend I have found another nice installation.
They are in Aberkenfig, just outside Bridgend itself comprises two columns on West street, and one on Bristol street. Open lanterns, and Stanton (?) concrete columns. I have a funny feeling the lanterns are Eleco Welwyn Mk3's, but may be another type as it is hard to see the detail on streetview. The columns still exist today (18/3/10) as I popped out to have a quick look earlier, they are poor photos as taken in the dark, but show some bracket detail.

Here are the streetview links for West street..

and Bristol street..

There are no signs of replacement columns, though the one on Bristol street seems to be spalling in the streetview picture.
I'll be keeping a close eye on these beasts, and maybe I can affect a rescue like the Eleco Welwyns I got.  :)

Those are absolutely fantastic, without a doubt some of the best old street lighting in Britain.

Yep Stanton 7b columns. It is difficult to identify the lanterns as you say, but on the 2nd picture, the vertical section of the canopy looks cylindrical but doesn't look to have the flare above the horizontal canopy rim of the Welwyn Mk3. The top also appears to taper in. It may a later Eleco lantern such as the HW852 (although it is difficult to tell if the canopy rim matches that of the thicker rim of the HW852) or an AC Ford lantern such as the AC730.

Simplex Diadem

This is a Revo/Relite Diadem, the front is too narrow to be the later Simplex version.

So what type are the ones used in Birmingham?

Looking through a book about railways around Port Talbot, I noticed in some photos taken in the Taibach area, Stanton concrete columns and mercury lanterns.
So trusty google streetview was fired up for a look.
All seemed lost as there are loads of sleeved columns now burning SOX.
However I found one survivor in Conduit place, though streetview shows its replacement already in position :(
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=taibach&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.644408,28.081055&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Taibach,+Neath+Port+Talbot,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.58919,-3.768332&spn=0.003013,0.006856&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=51.589578,-3.76886&panoid=hzUyn0LJ6vi-kGF_Q3mHTg&cbp=12,296.89,,2,-0.07

Passing the area tonight, I swung by Conduit place just on the off chance, even though the streetview images were probably taken months ago and I thought the column long gone.. I was very surprised to find the column still in place and the mercury lamp burning brightly! Its replacement still dead alongside.
Camera phone out of the car window and heres a pic.

Ill try and get a photo for you all in the daylight tomorrow... and I can feel a call to Neath Port Talbot council coming on to try and save the lantern too  ;)  (for once not an Eleco Welwyn!)
