Yep conical canopy is a Beta 4. An Eleco Welwyn has a hex section top canopy section. A good find none the less.

Thanks for correctly identifying the lantern guys, were Beta 4's avaliable with or without the outer globe? or has this example simply lost the outer globe at some time in the past?

They were available with bowls, however a lot of them have now lost them, or the UV from the mercury lamps turned them brown and they were removed.

I think a variant was made that did not have a bowl though, although most ordered by councils seemed to have bowls.

I don't think I have ever seen a Beta 4 fitted with a bowl in my life. All of those I came across did not have any especially the Trowbridge ones back in the early 80's before the Beta 5 expanded across the town in numbers.

Memories indeed before more Trowbridge side roads got bathed in that dreadful monochromatic yellow glare!

It was a bit strange when I moved to Dorset from there that my old house in Trowbridge was on a SOX lit street and the new house in Poole was on a entirely SON lit street which was a bit of a novelty in the early '80s. I have to say at the time most side roads in Poole were mercury lit so the reason my street had SON because when I moved there the concrete columns were newly sleeved fitted with Beta 79s.

Sorry for drifting off topic a bit!

I'm just about to make a point in the SW thread regarding this!

Some installations I have seen. I was only passing so didn't have time to photograph them, but found them on streetview..

A clearmain at the entrance to Pontcanna fields, Cardiff.

I had reason to go to Penarth last night, and was amazed at the installations I found there. There is street after street after street lit by cast iron columns and what I think are Thorn Beta 4's. I must add however that all of them were running SON lamps, no mercurys were found  :(
Here are couple of examples. Just have a look around the surrounding streets for loads more!

One Street (Uppercliff close) was different and had some rather nice swan-neck concrete columns running SOX lamps.

Hope they are of interest,
Mike.

Those are AC Ford AC730 lanterns, likely to be mounted on AC Ford swan necks too. They are probably relatively modern and could have been SON from new. In Southampton these lanterns were still being installed as casual replacements until about 2004, always in SON, and were fairly popular casual replacements in the 1990s when the council wanted to keep cast iron columns top entry rather than cutting off or replacing brackets and fitting modern side entry lanterns.

Hmm just down the road from some friends of mine in Cardiff. I didn't think there was any old stuff left there!

The SOX lanterns are GEC.
I didn't think those other top entry ones were Beta 4's, as they have a multi-angular neck, whereas the Beta 4's neck is rounded...
