Something that might be of interest, ye olde well glass fittings still made today:

These type of fittings used to be fitted in my home town during the 50's, they were fitted to wood and steel electricity poles. I'll try and find some old pictures of them.

I have 3 in my collection, the first is rather unusual for a Coughtrie make of lantern as it has a cast iron "canopy" - usually they are aluminium.

The 2nd Coughtrie has all aluminium metal work and "brim". This lantern needs some work as the bowl screws are seized in the aluminium of the bowl retaining ring.

The last is an Atlas version. Mike Barford has a brand new boxed example.

Some unique additions there, Phosco152. The third one down looks akin to the Phosco P108, albeit side-entry!

Using Phosco 152's first example, I do think that the early versions of Coughtrie lanterns were manufactured as cast iron as early versions of other lanterns such as Claire's vandal proof lantern which lit side roads in east Lancashire were made from cast iron.

I sort of forgot I also have this wall mounted GEC well glass with a cast iron body.

Well not quite a Well Glass fitting but it does have a streetlighting connection..

I have just acquired this rather attractive bulkhead fitting with a frosted glass bowl.

Image

The streetlighting link is that it is made by GEC.

Even the bowl is etched "GEC" by both screws.

Image

It looks 1960s and is in very good condition apart from some light corrosion to the base where it was screwed against the wall.

There were two wall mount Well Glass fittings on a substation in Brighouse, sadly both 'bowls' have gone and both lamps are missing. I do think that these type of lanterns are probably found on substations.

You can see the glass of that bulkhead has been formed to create two main beams either side.
