I was having a sort through my lamp collection recently and unearthed this little curiosity - quite literally actually, as there doesn't seem to be an earth on it - not that I'm too fussed about that sort of thing!

Anyway, I figured this item was pretty close to Ukastle's "raison-d'etre" as regards keeping posts on topic.
In addition, I suspect that without the once proud industrial powerhouse of the GEC to supply the gear, it simply would not exist.

On top of all that, you can see it also runs a mercury lamp!

Any suggestions on what its original purpose could have been?

File comment: The lamp consists of a 1930s "Osira" choke, with reflector / lampholder assembly. There is a carry handle to the top of the choke. There is no PF correction.

File comment: The reflector is fastened to a brass swivel joint, allowing fine adjustment to the "angle of dangle".

File comment: The typical period lamp holder looks like it can accept both 2 and 3 pin BC lamps.

File comment: The old boy is entrusted with a young, whipper snapper MBF lamp and gets it glowing nicely.

I reckon is a very early form of portable site light?, back when MV was in its hay day for road lighting, this would have been a powerfull portable light source?
