Then and Now

The "then" photo was taken on the 31st August 2005 and the "now" photo was taken today, the 17th April 2010. In the foreground of the "then" photo is a GEC Z5670, and in the background are two GEC Z5713 lanterns, all three running mercury. Fast forward to the present day and all three lanterns have been replaced. The closest Z5713 was replaced in 2006/7 with a ZX1 on a bracket, running SON. The Z5713 further away was replaced with an Altra running 36w PL-L in 2009, and the Z5670 in the foreground was replaced with an Altra within the past couple of months in 2010. All of this lighting is ill-fated and will be replaced sometime over the next 5 years, no doubt with post-top Libras.

A bit of a mismatch of light sources then with a SON lantern inbetween two CFL ones! Crazy!

I like the old photo with the Dick Kerr tram. Are those ZXU1s in the new photo or ZX2s with a weird bowl?

Strange mismatch of lighting there, a ZX3 and an Albany?  :?

Looks like the "typical Hampshire" shallow bowl ZX3s.

I've never seen a ZX3 with a shallow bowl before, I didn't recognise it!

They all have the regular bowl or flat glass in the North West as far as I've seen  ;)

Pictures of the A27 in Portchester, Hampshire, were taken circa 1950, showing Eleco HW509s on S&L columns. That was back in 1950, this is today, looking in the other direction a few columns east. And a close up as a tribute. Happy 60th Birthday to some of the oldest main road lighting in the country!

A "more modern" now and then from me.

As mentioned on the South West discussion page, traffic lights and lighting have been installed on the A30 north of Salisbury at the "Pheasant Inn" cross roads.

The scene early March 2010 with work about to start:

3 months later work is completed. CU 10m columns with Philips SGS253 flat glass Iridiums running 150W SON. There are 10 of these on the main carriageway although not all are visible - the ones of the minor roads of the junction aren't shown either - another 5.

The bollards are also illuminated which is totally unnecessary, reflective ones could have been used, not to mention the illuminated Give Way signs which were unlit before...
