Welcome to UKASTLE

Welcome to UKASTLE - the UK Association of Street Lighting Enthusiasts.
UKASTLE was set up in May 2007 with the aim of providing a focal point for all things related to street lighting. Since then we have engaged in many fantastic discussions and shared forgotten or little known information, and as members we have learnt a lot from each others' contributions. Whether you're a lighting devotee, a collector of lanterns, a photographer or just someone who is curious to find out more, please register with us via the discussion forums and enjoy being a part of this association.

27/8/10 - all users - please be aware that the appearance and functionality of the forums may change without warning. This is due to diagnostic testing of the forum code and the server system.
The previous problem of a different skin being shown is of unknown origin, as the skin that was being shown did not match the skin set as default for the forum. Therefore, further investigation will be carried out to find the cause and solution to this issue.

Guests > Please be aware that today (26/08) the forum is displaying in a different skin which has seen the navigation bar disabled. To access the homepage, reference section and links please do so via a search engine such as Google. The technical support manager (mazeteam) is currently conducting some tests and should revert the settings back later this evening.

Members > When you login, the settings will revert back to normal.

Persons wishing to register for an account on our forums will now have to complete the "Spam Catcher" test at the bottom of the form to fill in. Simply follow the task that is set out, and write your answer in the box provided.
This should hopefully reduce the number of spambot registrations to ZERO, as this Spam Catcher system has been designed and built by Mazeteam.co.uk as a unique unofficial modification to the phpbb3 forum software - and is used on Ukastle under license.

In addition, the website has been modified with an integrated login system. You can now log in to our database from the Home Portal (this includes the home page, links page, contact form, etc) as well as the forums. Due to php variable conflict, this function is not yet available on the Wiki/Reference Section, but this is being worked on.

The forums and Reference Section are now being handled on a new SQL database server, which will help to speed things up a little bit.

In addition, the registration procedure for new users has changed. All new users must tick an extra checkbox on the registration page to confirm they agree to additional terms and conditions for using the forums. This checkbox can only be ticked once the conditons have been read.

A new contact form has been built to allow email queries to be sent to the website and forum administrators. The link to this contact form is available at the bottom of every page.

In order to make the forum a bit more intuitive, there has been a change made to the NOTICE box that shows if you are not logged in. As from today, you can click on text to log in - and provided your browser has Javascript controls activated and not disabled, the notice box will expand to show Username and Password text boxes.

This has been tested, and you can indeed log in properly from this box, and thus elimates the need to seperately load the Log In page. A dropdown menu is also being trialled so that you can select whether to go to the board index or to the Active Topics page on login.

*Archive Section has now been added to the forum index. It requires login due to some General Chat topics being placed there.

*Phosco152 is now in charge of External Links - amendments to the UKASTLE Management list will follow.

There is an issue with the SQL server for the forum being a bit tempremental at the moment. If you recieve an "SQL Error" screen, simply refresh the page and in most cases it'll go away. If you saw the page after typing out a message, and refreshing the page doesn't help, try going back and re-submitting the message.
The issue is being looked at.

Also, emails for new member registration confirmations and some Topic Reply Notifications do not appear to be being sent or recieved. Please check the 'junk email' folder of your email inbox, as the "no-reply" part of the email address may trigger a spam filter. We are also checking whether a problem with the forum software may be causing this issue.

The entire forum crashed around 8am this morning including all the links to the home page. The error was basically "can't access SQL database" on the forum and home pages, so must have been I take it a hosting error? I don't know how long it was actually down for but it was more than just a few minutes.

December 31, 2009:

The forums today are having the odd technical problem every now and then. This is being monitored and action will be taken if this develops into a more notable problem.

The forum database has been backed up to a remote machine... this has been done so that any changes made over the next few days can be reversed with minimal loss

At the end of today (the start of 2010), the post count for this forum will be resynchronised. This will take deleted posts out of the total post count so we have a more accurate idea of how many posts we have. This may, however, break links to topics/posts that appear in "topic reply notification" emails. If this happens, please use the "view active topics" link to view latest posts (or use the summary feature on the homepage
